Tests · Whole-body MRI

One scan.
Five regions, no radiation.

A whole-body MRI is a single scan covering the head, neck, chest, abdomen and pelvis without ionising radiation. It takes 45–70 minutes and is used to screen for tumours, aneurysms and structural disease in people without symptoms.

MRI uses magnetic fields, not ionising radiation.

What it finds, and what it does not

What it finds, and what it does not.

Tumours, aneurysms and structural disease across the head, neck, chest, abdomen and pelvis, in people without symptoms.

A whole-body MRI does not reliably detect lung nodules under 5mm or early colonic lesions; a low-dose chest CT and a colonoscopy remain the appropriate tests for those.

Suitability

Who it suits, and who should not have it.

Suits: Adults without acute symptoms who want a broad structural baseline: the population this screening program is built for.

Should not have it: People with certain metal implants or pacemakers, significant claustrophobia, or reduced kidney function that limits contrast-agent use. Tell your coordinator before you book so the protocol can be adjusted or an alternative arranged.

In context

How it differs from the related test.

A low-dose chest CT is faster, uses a small radiation dose, and is the more sensitive test specifically for small lung nodules. An MRI has no radiation but runs longer and is not the right tool for early lung or colon findings. See "what it does not find" above.

Which tier includes it

Not itemised on any tier.

This is not itemised on any of the tiers on this site: their published MRI option (Advanced tier) is by region — brain, cervical or lumbar — not a whole-body protocol. A whole-body scan can be arranged as an addition; confirm availability and price with your coordinator before booking on the strength of this page alone.

FAQ

Questions worth asking before you book.

Does a whole-body MRI use radiation?
No. MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves, not ionising radiation, unlike a CT scan.
How long does the scan take?
45 to 70 minutes for the full five-region protocol, depending on the center and whether contrast is used.
Do I need contrast dye?
Some sequences use a gadolinium-based contrast agent. Your coordinator checks kidney function beforehand, since contrast is not used when kidney function is significantly reduced.
Can I have a whole-body MRI if I have a pacemaker?
Many modern pacemakers are MRI-conditional, but this must be checked device-by-device before booking. Tell your coordinator the make and model.
Will it detect early-stage lung or colon cancer?
Not reliably. A whole-body MRI is not a substitute for a low-dose chest CT or a colonoscopy for those two cancers specifically; the whole-body protocol is built for tumours and structural disease elsewhere in the body.
